SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) overlaps tracks to increase density but requires rewriting adjacent tracks during modifications — causing severe performance degradation under continuous write workloads like surveillance. SMR drives can cause dropped frames, stuttering playback, and recording gaps. All current WD Purple, SkyHawk, and Toshiba S300 drives use CMR. Do I need multiple drives for surveillance?

It depends on storage needs and redundancy requirements. Single drive: Simpler, lower cost — acceptable for home systems if you accept losing footage on drive failure. Multiple drives: More capacity plus redundancy — if one drive fails, recordings continue. Many NVRs support RAID 1 (mirroring) or RAID 5. For business or critical security applications, RAID is strongly recommended. Cost consideration: two 8TB drives in RAID 1 (8TB usable with redundancy) may be preferable to one 16TB drive (no redundancy).
